Planning a Destination Wedding in the Shenandoah Valley

The Shenandoah Valley is one of the most breathtaking wedding backdrops on the East Coast. Here's what couples need to know when planning a destination celebration in this part of the world.

There's a reason couples travel from across the country — and beyond — to get married in the Shenandoah Valley. The Blue Ridge Mountains form a backdrop that no decorator can replicate. The light in late afternoon turns golden in a way that photographers chase their whole careers. And the venues here — tucked into rolling farmland, perched above river valleys, or nestled in historic downtown properties — offer a setting that's simultaneously grand and deeply intimate.

At Falling Run Flowers & Design, we're based right on the Virginia and West Virginia border, and destination weddings make up a significant portion of our work each year. Here's what we wish every destination couple knew before they started planning.

Start Florals Earlier Than You Think

For local couples, florals often feel like a middle-of-planning decision. For destination weddings, we recommend reaching out to your floral designer within six months of your date — and earlier for peak season (May–October) celebrations. Popular dates book quickly in this region, and your florist needs time to source specialty blooms, coordinate with your venue, and develop a design that works with the specific light and architecture of the space.

Think About Logistics, Not Just Aesthetics

Destination weddings introduce practical challenges that don't exist for local events. Will your floral designer be setting up at your venue directly, or coordinating through a third party? How are flowers being transported and stored the night before? What happens if there's a weather delay?

We manage full logistics for all our destination events — including traveling beyond our standard 40-mile radius with our team, coordinating with your venue coordinator, and building in contingency plans for weather and supply. These aren't afterthoughts for us; they're part of every destination contract.

Lean Into the Landscape

One of the most common mistakes destination couples make is trying to import a look that has nothing to do with where they're getting married. The Shenandoah Valley has its own palette — sage, dusty rose, warm terracotta, the deep greens of the surrounding forest, the soft lavenders that echo the distant mountains. Designs that draw from the landscape feel more natural, more timeless, and frankly more beautiful in photographs than arrangements that fight the setting.

We work with you to understand your vision while also helping you see what the landscape offers. It's a collaboration, and the results are always better for it.

Venue Relationships Matter

We have established relationships with Landfall Lodge, Puesta Del Sol, Misty Mountain, and The George Washington Hotel, among others. Working with a florist who already knows your venue — the load-in logistics, the lighting conditions, the preferred setup windows — eliminates a layer of coordination stress for you. If you're still deciding on a venue, we're happy to advise.

Plan for the Unexpected

Mountain weather is gorgeous and unpredictable. We plan for it. Every destination event has a Plan A, Plan B, and often a Plan C — for supply, for weather, for staffing. We've never failed to deliver for a destination wedding, and we've dealt with everything from late frost events to last-minute venue changes. Our job is to make sure none of that stress reaches you on your day.
